Hi All
It is not since December 2009 that I have published anything on Naim’s entry into the digital streaming market, below is a link to this thread which is worth revisiting I suspect.
http://forums.naimaudio.com/displayForu ... 514/page/1
This particular segment of the market has grown substantially over the intervening years with many new serious products coming onto the market, from Naim alone we have seen the introduction of the UnitiQute, UnitiServe and versions now based upon their CD players with Digital Streaming/DAC units, namely the ND5 XS & NDX units targeted at the CD5 XS & CDX units.
`
Both these units duplicate the digital hub functions offered by the nDAC with the added function of Digital Streaming and optionally the addition of a FM/DAB tuner module, however as with their CD player equivalents adding the nDAC substantially enhances the performance and now with a range of three power supplies as upgrade options for the nDAC (XP5 XS, XPS2 & CD555PS) the enhanced performance can be substantial and for the first time making the XPS2 & CD555PS upgrade option available to the 5-series CD5 XS.
Over the weekend I have had my first opportunity to test out the new Naim NDS (DS/DAC), but should point out that this is a prototype and not the production version, I make this point because having now dealt with Naim for almost 40 years production units are often greatly superior to prototypes, in fact when this unit was dropped off I was told that the one currently being worked on in R&D is already 30% better and that this one & was actually held together with sticky tape and had been bouncing around the country for the last 6 weeks at various “Future of Hi Fi” events.
I elected to use our current passive reference system, in order to free up as much Naim Fraim space as possible which comprised of Naim NAC-552/552PS – Naim NAP-500/500PS into Neat Ultimatum XL-10.
To hand for source was Naim ND5 XS, Naim NDX, Naim nDAC & Naim NDS (prototype) with two each of the following; XP5 XS, XPS2 & CD555PS units together with PowerLines, HiLine & DC1 interconnects.
Following on from the excellent results achieved by adding an nDAC to act as a “Digital Hub” for Naim’s range of Integrated & Pre/Power amplifies I felt the best possible place to start would be a direct comparison between the nDAC versus the NDS, beginning with the most rudimentary installation of both, so nDAC (standalone) versus NDS/XP5 XS (minimum mandatory power supply) using our CDX2/DC1 and a Memory stick for 16/44.1 – 24/192 material.
The current prices for these in the UK are nDAC £2,150.00 – NDS/XP5 XS £7,845.00
The NDS was the clear winner here, raising the performance level of the CDX2 to unprecedented levels and files played from the memory stick in 24/192 just widened the gap still further.
OK this is not being very fair to the nDAC there is the not inconsiderable matter of an additional £5,695.00 paid out for the minimum NDS combination, how about if we stick another £430.00 in the budget making the comparison nDAC/CD555PS/Powerline/S-XPS Burndy (£8,275.00) versus NDS/XP5 XS (£7,845.00).
Well nothing quite prepares you for the results, even the now totally maxed out nDAC falls short of the NDS/XP5 XS using both as the digital hub/DAC for a Naim system although the gap was narrowed of course.
Time with the NDS was very limited so I decided not to use the two XPS2 units available and went as my final DAC versus DAC comparison by adding our second CD555PS to the NDS, it is well worth pointing out here that whilst the CD555PS comes supplied with a PowerLine it is not supplied with the S-XPS Burndy cable as is the case with both the XP5 XS & XPS2 units, with good reason as the CD555 head unit is supplied with the two necessary Burndy Cables which utilise both outputs on the CD555PS, the good news is that as with the CD555 head unit the NDS also utilises both outputs on the CD555PS but the two required Burndy cables are supplied at extra cost (usually £400.00 each or £645.00 for both if ordered with your NDS) so taking these additional costs in mind the comparison is now:
nDAC/CD555PS/PowerLine /S-XPS Burndy (£8,275) versus NDS (with pair of CD555 Burndy cables)/CD555PS/PowerLine (£12,620.00).
It came as no great surprise that the NDS/CD555PS combo now moved up a gear, well several actually, leaving the nDAC/CD555PS far behind, but because everything was set up to do so, the NDS digital output was connected to the nDAC via DC1 making the combination of NDS/CD555PS/nDAC/CD555PS but this merely pulled back the performance level to that of the nDAC/CD555PS level, so further comparisons with the nDAC were suspended at this point, freeing up that second CD555PS to be pressed into service on the NDS making the ultimate (no pun intended) DAC/Digital Hub to front a Naim system NDS/CD555PS/CD555PS with all the cables a grand total of £18,345.00.
In conclusion then the guys at Naim R&D have pulled off a spectacular triumph here it answers for me the questions, can the NDS be upgraded by an nDAC, no, is the NDS a better DAC than the nDAC yes.
This also leaves aside that the NDS is also a digital streamer and when I get more time I will post here the comparisons between the NDX & NDS combined with the CD555PS, plus there is the small matter of the current one in R&D rumoured to be 30% better than this unit and the power supplies are yet to have their “DR” upgrades which I am reliably informed takes their performance up by something equal to Hicap to Supercap upgrade but the latter will be applied to any Naim product using these PSU upgrades, the mind boggles at where this is going to take us once the production NDS/CD555PS-DR hits us.
Well I hope that’s helpful
Warmest regards
Norman
