"...shouty - only because I've yet to find the ideal surface for the CDS mk1 other than direct-to-carpeted floor. Place the CDS mk 1 transport on carpet and you'll have a CDP that sounds smoother, more dynamic, lifelike and distortion-free than any TT or CDP I've heard excepting the mk 2. All of the shout is gone as well.
Placement on a Fraim degrades the realism a bit and returns the shout slightly. Third best support heard is a modified AF/BASE stand (remove the rubber bumpers under the Sorbathane bars.) All other supports tried turns the player into the mediocrity known as Most Other CDPs.
With the CDS mk1, I've found the Naim Fraim is the best surface if you must use a stand. Placing the head unit directly to carpet on a concrete slab floor is slightly better other than a small reduction in image focus and ambience; however, it's not a great solution with small children or pets. Second best is Audiophile Furniture's BASE platform and stand system BUT with a modification to the BASE platform with the removal of the rubber furniture protecting pads under the Sorbathane pod-feet (mod courtesy of Naim R&D) and the factory supplied floor cone's nut/washer assembly replaced with standard machine nuts which can now be torqued with a wrench as opposed to previous hand tight only (mod courtesy of yours truly.) Third best has not been determined with Sound Org, Mana (p1 thru p11 tried with and without 3M bumpons) and Solid Steel deemed totally unacceptable.
Connection is standard hookup via Naim's instructions with special care to ensure there is no twist in the Burndy on either end of the cable. Any tension left on the Burndy connectors will cause a slight pin misalignment resulting in a poor electrical connection in the power supply severely degrading the unit's performance (tip from former CDS2 owner Ron Toolsie and Naim employee Richard Dane.) Installing the Burndy correctly eliminating twist is easy. I can send you a link to instructions or explain how to do it successfully in one attempt if needed.
Since installing Fraims, I've found the best sound with *all* of my DIN signal connections completely locked up tight unlike the new practice per Naim to leave DIN locking rings loose. I have found results vary with supports and I suspect changing the floor's substrate, room acoustics and olive vs ref kit could affect the outcome.
I/Cs are all factory supplied lavenders, AC cords are factory supplied Volex and Mayor. AC plug sequence is "reverse hierarchy" with power amp plugged into the outlet nearest the circuit breaker, preamp next, CDPS next followed by a preamp NAPSC in the last outlet on the same, single, dedicated AC circuit.
No case dampening is applied to the kit since installing the Fraim. Prior to the Fraim, I used two loaded CD jewel cases on the CDS mk 1 head unit and one loaded cd jewel case on all other casework with Mana, SO, AF/BASE and when floor mounting components which slightly improved vocal intelligibility during complex passages. Again, this is no longer required since installing the Fraim with either the CDS or CDS2."
